dragoons are ishgardian holy knights, trained specifically in the art of fighting dragons. now, in my interpretation, this happy ending to the questline is a red herring the ending is meant to imply a fate much more grim for heustienne, and for ishgard’s dragoons as a whole. the fact that the two quests preceding this are called Fatal Seduction and Into the Dragon’s Maw is by no means a coincidence, although the first may not be directly referring to estinien, which i’ll go over again later. nidhogg is able to so easily overwhelm estinien because they are already both hateful beings (and estinien’s use of nidhogg’s eye may have influenced this or allowed nidhogg to possess estinien more easily). both of their perceived enemies attacked and killed a member of their family, someone close to them, and now they both vow revenge out of a sense of pure spite. estinien and nidhogg are written to clearly oppose eachother, but they have a lot in common. this isn’t because of nidhogg’s raw power, it’s because nidhogg and estinien are too similar. the main theming of the dragoon story quests pre heavensward is duality, and this extends into estinien’s character in the heavensward msq. never in an mmo have i seen something so subtly implemented, but then again, it is all up to interpretation.Īt first, it’s about estinien using nidhogg’s eye in attempt to destroy nidhogg, but then being overcome by nidhogg’s power. it requires a lot of analysis, but it’s very interesting to see how the dragoon’s theming may even tie into the job’s gameplay. So the job quests for dragoon initially disappointed me, but on reflection, they convey exactly what needs to be conveyed about the dragoon job’s story (especially as it relates to estinien’s character and the rest of the heavensward theming).
